Sie wurde in Ballenstedt geboren und verlebte dort eine unbeschwerte Kindheit. Sie bezauberte mit ihrer Schönheit und Liebenswürdigkeit und wuchs mit den Schwestern Bardua auf.  Gerhard von Kügelgen malte sie und Wilhelm, sein Sohn, der bekannte Autor der "Jugenderinnerungen eines alten Mannes" war sehr angetan von ihr. Die Prinzessin war musisch begabt, zeichnete und aquarellierte und kopierte sehr gekonnt Bildnisse und Gemälde von Malern ihrer Zeit. 1817 heiratete sie Prinz Friedrich von Preußen, einen Neffen des Königs Friedrich Wilhelm III., auf Schloß Ballenstedt. Das Prinzenpaar hatte zwei Söhne, lebte zuerst in Berlin und dann in Düsseldorf. Nachdem das Rheinland nach dem Wiener Kongreß 1815 an Preußen fiel, wurde Prinz Friedrich Militär-Gouverneur der Rheinprovinz.

Die Hofhaltung fand im Schloß Jägerhof bei Düsseldorf statt und bald wurde das Prinzenpaar kultureller Mittelpunkt. Als Förderer für Kunst und Kultur und durch ihr soziales Engagement gewann es Achtung und Wertschätzung der Bevölkerung. Prinz Friedrich wurde später der erste Ehrenbürger Düsseldorfs.
